I have always been a petrol head. I grew up around cars, I love the sound of a good engine, and I was probably the last person you would expect to be championing electric. So when I tell you it genuinely won me over, take that seriously.
I cover 25 to 30,000 miles a year, and a big chunk of that is now electric - so this is not theory to me. No more fuel stops. Lower running costs. Servicing intervals that feel almost too good to be true. And it is smoother, quieter and quicker off the line than you would believe until you have felt it.

Most EV owners do the majority of their charging at home overnight, which means they start every day with a full charge and rarely think about it at all. Public chargers are there when you need them, not as a daily necessity.
If you run a company, this is where the maths gets interesting.
This is the part most people don't realise until they sit down and work it through. Putting an electric BMW through a limited company, or taking one via salary sacrifice, can cost a fraction of what the same car costs a petrol driver once tax is accounted for. Here's why, in plain terms.
Benefit-in-Kind for 2026/27. A petrol or diesel company car typically sits between 25% and 37%. On a £45,000 BMW that gap alone can mean thousands a year less tax on your payslip. The rate is fixed and rises just one point a year to 9% by 2029/30, so you can plan ahead.
First Year Allowance on a new EV. Buy a brand-new electric BMW outright through the business and the full cost can be written off against your profits in year one, currently available until 31 March 2027. A used EV doesn't qualify the same way, so timing and spec matter.
Salary sacrifice. If your employer offers it, you give up part of your gross salary for the car, so you're paying out of pre-tax income. Drivers commonly save somewhere around a fifth to a half of the equivalent cost, and the only tax due is that low Benefit-in-Kind figure.
No fuel benefit charge, plus the charging perks. There's no taxable fuel benefit on a company EV the way there is on petrol, charging at the workplace is currently treated as tax-free, and there's relief available on installing a charge point too.

Is public charging actually reliable now?
It is far better than it was. The UK now has over 118,000 public chargers, and rapid chargers on motorways are improving quickly. Most EV owners rarely rely on public charging for day-to-day driving.
What about longer journeys - will I make it?
That depends on your mileage and the model you choose. I will go through your actual routes with you, not a theoretical scenario. Most people are pleasantly surprised once they see the numbers.
I am not ready to commit yet. Is that okay?
